10 Innocent People Sentenced to Death

In the United States and elsewhere, there have been lots of cases of innocent people being executed for crimes they did not commit. Others have been put on death row, and many were mercifully exonerated and released from prison in light of subsequent evidence. Many others have not been so fortunate, however. In the U.S. alone, for example, subsequent evidence shows that in at least 39 executions there are serious doubts about whether the inmate executed actually committed the crime in the first place. Here are accounts of 10 people that have been wrongly sentenced to death, including some of whom were executed.

Despite evidence that he was innocent, Colin Campbell Ross was convicted and executed in Australia in 1922 for allegedly raping and murdering a child. After the wine-bar owner's execution, attempts were made to clear his name, and upon re-examining old evidence in the case using modern forensic techniques in the 1990s, his innocence was established. The Victorian government pardoned Ross on May 27, 2008, 86 years after his wrongful execution.
